Event Planning for 2014

As of mid April, 2014, the following events are being planned for the current calendar year.  If you don’t see “your” event below, be sure to contact and come help us plan it!

1. Fairview Goat Farm and Dairy Tour, with a post tour visit to the Bread Board for pizza.

IMG_6838Be sure to join us for this fun, interesting and delicious visit to the Fairview Goat Farm and Dairy, on Father’s Day (June 15th). Bring dear old Dad along for the gathering at Fairview, in Dallas, Oregon, at 2:30 pm for a tour of the farm and dairy, to learn the ups and downs, ins and outs of raising milk goats. We’ll also get a peek at the dairy, to learn how farmers Laurie and Terry’s milk, cheese, skyr, ice cream and other products are made. After a stop at the cute and fascinating Goat Museum, we’ll head over to the Bread Board in Falls City, to share some pizzas and salads, and learn how the folks at the bakery use their wood-fired oven to create delicious breads, pastries and pizza. There will be no charge for the event, but we request RSVPs by email to to let us know how many in your party, and if you’ll be coming to the Bread Board, so we can plan for the right numbers.

Additional details TBA–watch this space!

2. Visit to the Rogue Hopyard

IMG_6692On the last weekend in August (exact date and time TBA) we are planning a visit to the Rogue hop farm near Independence, Oregon. We’ll gather in the afternoon for a tour of the large barns and processing facilities, to learn how Rogue developed, harvests, and processes its own hops for its local beer. We’ll have the opportunity to taste some of Rogue’s best, at their outdoor restaurant/picnic area, while hearing stories of beer brewing from an emeritus member of Oregon State University’s hop breeding faculty.

There may be a small charge for this event to cover the costs of the beer tasting. Stay tuned for details as they develop.

3. Showing of the Film “Resistance”

Antibiotics were first massed-produced in the 1940s. Their ability to fight and kill bacteria revolutionized medicine and had profound effects on everything from agriculture to the Armed Forces. After only 70-years, however, these miracle drugs are failing. Just one kind of antibiotic resistant infection kills more people each year than emphysema, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, and homicide combined, and there are now dozens of these so-called Superbugs each with its own challenges and costs. This film analyzes the causes of this problem, which include use of antibiotics at sub-therapeutic levels in animal feed. See for more on the film.

Slow Food Corvallis is teaming up with the Small Farms and Food and Social Justice Programs at OSU to bring this film to the OSU Campus. We’re also working with the Slow Food regional governor to enable showings of the film in Portland.

Currently, it looks like the film will be shown on campus, during the week of October 7th. We hope to bring the film’s producer as well as other experts together to lead a post-film discussion.

Stay tuned for more details, which will be posted here as available.

4. Culinary Breeding Network/Slow Meat/Terra Madre Fundraising Event

We are in the very early “brainstorming” phase of planning for this event. We envision a dinner prepared by local chefs, including dishes using locally-bred varieties which an enthusiastic group of diners could test for flavor. We may combine this with some locally grown “slow” meat to present a full meal. The event would be priced to raise funds to support Terra Madre participants, and for our other ongoing projects. Tentatively scheduled sometime in the late September-mid October period.

If you would like to be involved in organizing this event, please contact

5. Terra Madre Day

Following the unfortunate cancellation of Terra Madre Day in 2013 due to a freak snow storm and cold snap, we’re looking forward to our winter gathering in celebration of Terra Madre. The event is already scheduled for Sunday December 7th at the Benton County Fairgrounds, and will feature a group of wonderful local vendors and a hot meal prepared by Slow Food Corvallis. The event will be a collaboration between Slow Food Corvallis, Ten Rivers Food Web, and other local food programs.
