Event Planning for 2014
As of mid-April 2014, the following events are being planned for the current calendar year. If you don’t see “your” event below, be sure to contact email@example.com and come help us plan it!
1. Visit to the Rogue Hopyard
On Sunday, August 31, we’ll visit the hopyard at Rogue Farms, situated on the Willamette River between Buena Vista and Independence (about 36 minutes’ drive from Corvallis). While the harvest happens in the adjacent field, we’ll follow the hop cones on their course through the processing buildings. We’ll watch as the cones are mechanically picked from the bines, kiln-dried, cooled, and pressed into bales. Then we’ll move on to the lawn and picnic tables at the on-farm pub, where we’ll taste Rogue beers made with the farm’s hops at Rogue’s Newport brewery and hear tales of Oregon hop history by Dr. Alfred Haunold, the “Hopmeister” who for 34 years led the USDA-OSU hop breeding program in Corvallis.
The tour and talk are free of charge. For those 21 and over, Rogue will be offering a free “taste of the day” beer as well as a tasting tray of four 4-ounce glasses of their other beers for $6.50 per tray.
Snacks will be available for purchase, too; please don’t bring your own.
We will gather at the farm at 2:45 p.m. and begin our tour promptly at 3:00 p.m.
2. Showing of the Film “Resistance”
Antibiotics were first massed-produced in the 1940s. Their ability to fight and kill bacteria revolutionized medicine and had profound effects on everything from agriculture to the Armed Forces. After only 70-years, however, these miracle drugs are failing. Just one kind of antibiotic resistant infection kills more people each year than emphysema, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, and homicide combined, and there are now dozens of these so-called Superbugs each with its own challenges and costs. This film analyzes the causes of this problem, which include use of antibiotics at sub-therapeutic levels in animal feed. See http://resistancethefilm.com/ for more on the film.
Slow Food Corvallis is teaming up with the Small Farms and Food and Social Justice Programs at OSU to bring this film to the OSU Campus. We’re also working with the Slow Food regional governor to enable showings of the film in Portland.
The film will be shown at OSU on October 7th. We hope to bring the film’s producer as well as other experts together to lead a post-film discussion.

3. Terra Madre Fundraiser Dinner at Gathering Together Farm
Slow Food Corvallis will be having its own fundraiser for our two local Terra Madre delegates, Linda Ziedrich and Mickey Clayton, on Saturday, October 11. Chef JC Mersmann will be cooking one of his fabulous meals for us at Gathering Together Farm, featuring Navajo-Churro lamb raised by delegate Mickey Clayton of Dot Ranch in Scio as well as local produce from the Culinary Breeding Network which consists of plant breeders, seed growers, farmers, chefs and others focused on developing vegetable varieties with superior culinary and nutritional value. 4. Terra Madre Day
Following the unfortunate cancellation of Terra Madre Day in 2013 due to a freak snow storm and cold snap, we’re looking forward to our winter gathering in celebration of Terra Madre. The event is already scheduled for Sunday December 7th at the Benton County Fairgrounds, and will feature a group of wonderful local vendors and a hot meal prepared by Slow Food Corvallis. The event will be a collaboration between Slow Food Corvallis, Ten Rivers Food Web, and other local food programs.
