Ladies in the fields dinner and wine event
Slow Food Corvallis celebrates local women farmers and the food they produce with a summer dinner at Tyee Wine Cellars

CORVALLIS, Oregon –Slow Food Corvallis (SFC) will hold a summer dinner and wine event at Tyee Wine Cellars to celebrate local women in mid-Willamette Valley agriculture on Thursday, August 9. Heidi Tunnell, Eugene’s 2011 Iron Chef winner, will prepare a four-course meal on site, crafted with local foods from family farms. The event will be held on the Buchanan Family Century Farm (26335 Greenberry Road), nestled in the heart of the valley south of Corvallis.
At the centerpiece of the SFC event are 12 portraits of women farmers by Scio artist Rebecca Waterhouse. The “Ladies in the Fields” series honors the role of women in northwest Oregon’s sustainable farming phenomenon. Waterhouse has combined her art and love of agriculture to produce portraits that capture farmers and producers in their daily routines –– milking, honey harvesting, blueberry picking, cheese making.
Showcasing what the farmers do best, Tunnell will be working her culinary magic with their local summer fare. Guests are in for a delectable taste adventure created by this Willamette Valley chef who is on the forefront of the farm-to-table culinary renaissance in Oregon. Like the women farmers Waterhouse has painted, Tunnell is outstanding in her field. She will prepare the dinner on-site, giving guests a close-up view of a chef in action.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this unique opportunity to celebrate Willamette Valley women in agriculture, watch a talented chef in action, and enjoy a local foods meal, all in the lovely country setting of the Buchanan farm,” says Marilyn Henderson, Board Chair of Slow Food Corvallis.
The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. when Lise Hubbe of Sweetwell Farm in Scio picks up the reins on her draft horse team to treat guests to a wagon tour of the hazelnut orchard and scenic open spaces on the Buchanan farm. When not pulling a wagon, her Brabant Belgians June and Hal are a working team offering a traditional twist on green technology that is gentle on the land.
While feasting on Tunnell’s appetizers and tasting Tyee and Ponzi Vineyards wine, guests can meet with Waterhouse and the featured farmers at Tyee’s gallery display of their “Ladies in the Fields” portraits. Several farmers will also have non-perishable products for sale.
Dinner will be served family style in the open-air barn. Tyee and Ponzi wines will be available for purchase by the glass or bottle. Guests preferring a non-alcoholic beverage can sip on a refreshing lavender honey lemonade made with Queen Bee Apiary honey.
True to her trademark farm-fresh approach, much loved at Tunnell’s popular Creswell barn dinners, the menu will be posted a few days before the event on slowfoodcorvallis.org. Drawing on the expected seasonal selections from the featured farmers, the meal is currently slated to include lamb sausage bites,
mushroom toasts, summer squash salad, berry-glazed grilled chicken, and vanilla bean pots de crème with blueberry compote served in half-pint mason jars.
This event captures what Slow Food is all about –– family farms, the farmers, the land, local foods, and the talented chefs and winemakers who can bring it all together in wonderful taste adventures, says Henderson. “And it will be a lot of fun for everyone – I just might be first in line for the wagon tour!”
