On Sunday, June 19th we enjoyed a tour of a working hazelnut (also known as filbert) orchard as well as a demonstration of the shelling line and pressing of oil. The tour was led by Freddy Guy Filberts owners Barb and Fritz Foulke and was accompanied by tastings of their hazelnut products. There was also a short presentation by Shawn Mehlenbacher, leader of the OSU Filbert breeding program. We learned how new cultivars for Oregon’s hazelnut industry are bred for kernel quality and disease resistance. Additional food items featuring hazelnuts were prepared by Slow Food board members and shared with participants. This included hazelnut pesto pasta salad, hazelnut torte and hazelnut cheese crisps, chocolate and hazelnut-coated Oregon strawberries and hazelnut shortbread. We enjoyed a picnic on the lawn following the tour and tasting.
